How YOU can Help CAcert.org
- One of the things that CAcert.org depends on is advertising revenue. This helps to keep the lights on. But this is low at the moment because CAcert's profile has shrunk over time (for all the normal reasons).
BUT, CAcert's community is growing by leaps and bounds! We should be able to tap this community strength, and get our advertising revenue rocking. Here's how you can help.
Adopt A Page Step by Step
Step 1. Identify your place inside the Community. Find the role that best suits you: user of certs, Assurer of members, Arbitrator of disputes, administrator of systems. There are so many roles, they don't need to be listed.
Step 2. Find your favourite CAcert web page that relates to your place. Use the page that describes the contribution you make. If you're an Assurer, pick the handbook or the policy or some other related thing. If you just use certs, find the page that helps you use them! Important: you have to do this part yourself, not look at someone else's list.
Step 3. Link to that place from your many websites. We have a community that is chock-full of techies, sysadms, web hosting masters, programmers, etc etc. So find a bunch of your pages, and find a reason to link into your area there in CAcert.
Step 4. Keep it live and relevant. Update your collection from time to time.
What NOT to do
There are all sorts of page-boosting strategies out there. These are based on watching the page-search algorithms and figuring out ways to get the link counts up. E.g., jumping on to 1000 blogs and posting three-word comments linking back to your favourite casino. Don't follow strategies! The reason is simple: the search engines and advertisers are way way ahead of you, and they know about all the strategies. They discount stuff when they detect the strategies in place.
Instead, this isn't about strategies but employing the random responses of our community. If everyone does something that they think up themselves this will look like we are a community. Thinking. For ourselves. No bad thing, huh?
Also, do not link to this page, unless you just happen to be a comma junkie. Spread the word, by word of mouth. Search engines are these days smart enough to read language and figure out who's taunting them. But they still can't listen to word of mouth. Yet

My dream is that we have many competences and we celebrate them all and we all respect each other. I have another dream which is we don't take ourselves too seriously, and have some fun on the journey :) I'll settle for one of the two!

Just some layout -> CAcert.org - Visual Identity (not yet defined finally) Thoughts from a comma junkie in regards to statements made: "a community that is chock-full of techies, sysadms, web hosting masters, programmers, etc etc." and "you just happen to be a comma junkie" What could this mean to me? Is CAcert.org just a hard-core Tech-Community and other Competences are not welcome at all, as they are considered as useless or of minor quality or neglectable as content is the only king for CAcert.org Community? - If so, CAcert.org should continue as in the past and be the happy tech club. Results from this behavior of the past are on the table. Or is past = present = future? or If other Competences, not being Technology, within CAcert.org think and act within their professional mind-set in cooperation with Technology, they have to subordinate? - If so, CAcert.org should continue as in the past and be the happy tech club. Results from this behavior of the past are on the table. Or is past = present = future? My Dream: All CAcert.org Competence Areas respect each other competences and cooperate with each other as one Community. - Close to the impossible.

I updated several of my own CAcert.org related web pages today. Part of that involved adding information about the LISA'12 conference that I will be attending soon. I already have an event listing for this conference on our Wiki. On the conference web site, they have a Help Promote LISA'12 webpage. I was able to pick up several graphics from their site that I have added to my own pages.
- It would be quite useful if we had a page that could offer buttons and banners similar to the above mentioned "Help Promote . . ." page. I have never developed these sort of graphics, so I can't just step up and do this myself. But I would be happy to help develop such a page if someone could develop or point me to button and/or banner graphics that would be appropriate.
Such a "Help Promote . . ." page would be a valuable addition to this Adopt A Page campaign.
